Industry Expert Interview Reflection Report

Post-Interview Reflection Report

1. Introduction

For this assignment, I had the opportunity to interview my brother-in-law, Joel Varughese, who works as a Full Stack Developer at Morgan Stanley. I chose Joel because his career path closely aligns with what I hope to pursue in the future. He has years of experience in software development, and his role at a leading financial institution gave me a chance to learn how technology is applied in high-stakes, fast-paced environments. Since we already have a personal connection, the conversation felt natural and open, which allowed us to go deeper into his journey and the advice he had to offer.

2. Key Takeaways from the Conversation

My conversation with Joel was filled with helpful insights about the real-world experience of being a software developer.

  • Career Advice: Joel stressed the importance of building a strong foundation in computer science topics like data structures, algorithms, and operating systems. However, he said hands-on experience is just as important. He encouraged me to explore both front-end frameworks like React or Angular and back-end tools such as Node.js or Spring Boot. Joel also pointed out that knowing how to work with both SQL and NoSQL databases and becoming familiar with cloud platforms like AWS or Azure would help me stand out. He reminded me that soft skills such as communication, teamwork, and adaptability are just as valuable as technical ability.

  • Industry Trends: Joel mentioned some key trends that are shaping the industry right now. Artificial Intelligence and Generative AI are making a strong impact, particularly in areas like algorithmic trading and internal development tools. Cloud computing continues to grow, with companies shifting toward hybrid environments to increase flexibility. Cybersecurity remains a top priority, especially in finance where protecting sensitive data is critical. Joel also shared that real-time data processing is becoming more important as businesses need to make decisions quickly. He mentioned the concept of agentic AI, where systems are designed to work more independently, and believes this will become increasingly important.

  • Technical Challenges: Joel described some of the complex problems he faces in his job. Financial applications often handle large amounts of data and require high performance with very low latency. On top of that, they need to be reliable and secure. He explained that integrating modern tools with older legacy systems can be tricky and often requires creative problem-solving. Working in a large organization also means coordinating with different teams, which adds another layer of complexity.

3. Reflection

Talking to Joel gave me a much clearer picture of what it takes to succeed in a full stack developer role, especially in an enterprise setting. I had a general understanding of what the job involved, but I did not fully realize how challenging and rewarding it can be. The way he described the need to balance speed, security, and reliability made me appreciate how important each part of the development process is.

One thing that surprised me was how much older technology is still in use at big companies. I always assumed that most systems were built with the latest tools, but Joel explained that updating or replacing legacy systems can take years. This made me realize that flexibility and the ability to work with different types of systems is a big part of the job. On the other hand, hearing about how new technologies like AI are being introduced into the workflow confirmed my excitement about the direction this field is heading.

The interview also made me more confident in my interest in full stack development. I enjoy working on both the front-end and back-end of applications, and the idea of building complete systems from start to finish is really appealing. Joel’s perspective showed me how impactful and creative this role can be.

4. Future Steps

This conversation helped me see the path forward more clearly. Based on Joel’s advice, I plan to:

  • Focus on courses that explore cloud technologies, advanced databases, and scalable architectures

  • Start personal projects that combine both front-end and back-end tools while emphasizing performance and security

  • Look for internships that offer real experience with large-scale systems, especially in tech or finance

  • Continue building my communication and teamwork skills through group work and networking events

  • Spend time learning about AI tools that developers are beginning to use, so I can stay in sync with current trends

Overall, this interview was incredibly motivating and gave me a better sense of what it takes to thrive in the tech world. I left the conversation feeling inspired and more focused on what I want to achieve next.
